There are currently two books that documents African American History in Erie County. Journey From Jerusalem authored by Sarah Thompson was the first to open the lives of African Americans to citizens in Erie City and County. Her book detailed the introduction of Blacks into Erie County from 1795 through 1995. It is the first and most comprehensive book to date of Erie African Americans citizens. This book may be purchased at the Erie History Center.

The second, Erie African Americans in 1880 was authored and published by Johnny Johnson, the webmaster of this site. Johnny did an inclusive study of African Americans in Erie in 1880 denoting their place of birth, jobs held, property owned, educational status, family structure and how they fared as a community. This book may be purchased from the Erie History Center or from the author.
